Biology Degree

The biology program at Gwynedd-Mercy College is an integrated course of study which is molecularly focused with a strong emphasis on molecular and cellular biology, genetics, and biochemistry. GMC's biology students gain a broad-base in the physical sciences with required coursework in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Students who graduate from GMC with a biology degree automatically earn a minor in chemistry.

GMC's biology program provides state-of-the-art laboratory training in current technology that is applicable to research in a graduate program and at biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Students must conduct research as part of the requirement in the biology program, which gives students practical, hands-on research experience that is critical for future employment or graduate study.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with Secondary Education Certification is ideal for students interested in biology with a desire to teach at the secondary level. The curriculum for this degree is virtually identical to the biology major, with the same required courses, but with additional credits in secondary education. Students graduating with a degree in biology with secondary education certification major in biology and education, training them as biologists with the ability to teach. Graduates of the BS in Biology with Secondary Education program are similarly qualified for careers traditionally pursued by graduates with the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
The Natural Science degree is a two-year program designed for students wishing to gain a foundation in scientific theory and practice. This education should qualify the student for entry-level employment or continued education toward the baccalaureate degree. The degree is ideal for part-time students already working in the science industry wishing to progress to a higher level in their current field. The program is relatively equivalent to the first two years of the Bachelor of Science degree in biology, making the transition from the AS to BS degree relatively seamless.
The study of Biology contributes to an understanding of living things from the molecular to the ecosystem level. Knowledge of biological principles helps a student think analytically and logically and aids in the ability to make informed and responsible decisions. Graduates of our biology program have a number of career options. Graduates enter the workforce upon graduation or attend graduate or professional school for more advanced study. You may work in clinical or academic research, pharmaceutical industry, or the medical profession as a physician, dentist, veterinarian, physician's assistant, or physical therapist. You could pursue a career in environmental science, public health, pharmaceutical sales, or scientific writing.
